Hello, I am a A2 Photography student, studying at Chew Valley Sixth Form. This blog is created to show the stages of my self-directed study. I have chosen to focus of street and portraiture, combining the two genres together.

My Photos - Street
STREET.

These images are set in the centre of Bristol where it is most busy so I can capture the best image I can by using different angles and directions. By gathering all research from Laurent Roch, Michael Penn on street photography, this set of images are in creation of those particular photographers, how Laurent Roch catches the crowd and their on going lifestyle, so in these images I managed to capture this as well, as no one is posed or positioned this makes it real. Also another aspect of Laurent Roch's work I have carried on with in my own work is the shots he has used, for example the use of wide shot, catching both side walks on the street to get an overall more effective image. Michael Penn inspiration has also been used focusing more on getting close to the people in their everyday life catching individuals looking in your direction, and people walking around you, this altogether creates an good image that I could take further with combining portraiture in this setting.

Portraiture Photographer
Justin Grant

What I like about Justin Grant's work is that it varies from being simple and pure to the opposite to dark and drastic. The main focus changes within in each picture, but a style I like is the effect of two pictures in one, for example a main image that is centered, to the background image that relates to the other image, yet it is placed to the side and has a faded effect, I believe this is effective as it shows skills within photography. Also as I am focusing on portraiture and street photography I recognise that Justin Grant has areas where he has combined the two together as well. What I gain from researching this photographer is the different ways in combining street and portraiture photography as well as the effect of the image, wether its going to be simple or dramatic.
Portraiture Photographer
Alex D James

Alex D James is a fashion portraiture photographer. This photographer is unique in the sense that within his pictures he has captured the shadows of the models, which is due to the positioning of lighting, this looks effective and different to other photographers work i have focused on. What I like most of all about his work, is how the photos are presented, two pictures side by side, combining to make one. Like other fashion photographers work he has a wide range of pictures, how he uses bright colors and clothing on the models, to the opposite with the simple more neutral colors, I believe this works well as it shows his individuality as a photographer exploring and experimenting with colors and lighting. This is what I have learnt from his work, to experiment with different range of colors.
